A fundamental rule with respect to Tuscan wines is to buy all the 1997s and 1999s you can afford. Both are extraordinary vintages of ripeness and richness that should surpass the finest wines produced in such great years as 1990 and 1985.Both are consistently superb throughout Tuscany's vinicultural regions.
1997 is a spectacular vintage of exceptionally high quality, especially for Brunello di Montalcino and central Tuscany.
Gorelli's 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Le Potazzine is reminiscent of the famed Spanish wine called Pingus from Ribera del Duero. Its opaque garnet color is followed by an extraordinarily provocative perfume of black fruits, expresso, roasted meats, and plum/prune elements.New saddle leather and Asian spice aromas also make an appearance.Viscous, huge, and oozing with concentration, this remarkable effort is pure, thick, and surprisingly approachable for such a young, massive Brunello.Anticipated maturity:now-2016. This is a tour de force in winemaking!
